Ciaran Leonard is a multidisciplinary artist who works with painting, collage, and installations. His current practice encompasses figurative representations and depictions of the body, shifting fluidly between representation and abstraction. Leonard emphasizes the body in various states—whether relaxed, foetal, brawling, or crucified—capturing the physical and spiritual expressions of his own emotions.

Leonard's work portrays the body in numerous forms, exploring themes of tension and relaxation. He seeks to translate his personal emotions and experiences into visual form, often addressing fleeting thoughts and feelings he finds difficult to vocalize. His art also looks outward, aiming to encapsulate ideas and emotions that extend beyond his immediate understanding.

Using a range of mediums, Leonard leverages their unique qualities to express himself most authentically. His themes often delve into brutality, vulnerability, and melancholy, reflecting a deep engagement with these aspects of the human condition. For Leonard, creating art is a source of purpose, allowing him to navigate and articulate both his internal landscape and the broader, often elusive, complexities of the world around him.

“I paint the body in many states; foetal, relaxed, brawling, crucified”

“I feel like I am on the verge of a breakthrough and using collage has been a refreshing way to be productive and restart my artistic process.”

Ciaran Leonard will still continue to paint and create art with installations and other mediums, but the collages have been a good supplement to feed into other artworks and inform his own visual library. The message or meaning behind these works are as unclear and as noisy as the works themselves. Interpret from them what you will. He thinks these works complement each other and indicate a transition between materials and thought processes that he has been shifting between.
